United Against Racism opposes racism in all its forms. In recent months we have seen a rise in racist activity in this country; it has taken three main forms.
- A spike in far right and fascist agitation particularly focused on opposition to new Direct Provision centres in rural Ireland.
- A number of ‘mainstream’ politicians – notably Noel Grealish, Independent TD for Galway West, and Verona Murphy , Fine Gael candidate in the Wexford by-election – have made racist statements hoping to repeat the success of Peter Casey polling 20% in the Presidential election by mobilizing anti-Traveller sentiment.
- An escalation of racist policies by the Fine Gael government (while its leaders talk anti-racist language): most notably the further expansion of the discredited Direct Provision system and the further cruel dispersal of asylum seekers round the country; and the disgraceful vote by 4 Fine Gael MEPS not to rescue refugees drowning in the Mediterranean.
These manifestations of racism reinforce each other. Every step forward by the far right is met with concessions from the ‘centre’; every concession from the centre creates more space for the far right. United Against Racism condemns them all.
We reject the notion of free speech for hate speech and for fascists. We say the fascists should crawl back into the holes they came from.We condemn the ‘dog whistles’ of Grealish and Murphy. We say racism has no place in Irish politics and society,
We welcome asylum seekers and migrants but oppose Direct Provision. To all the racists we say it is Government policies NOT migrants or refugees that are to blame for the shocking housing and health crises.
